I've been paying attention to the continuing circus that is our Supreme Court judicial nominee process. It has been four days since President Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, and the right has come out against her nomination, which is no surprise, as any President that nominates an individual to the high court is going to face opposition to their pick regardless of party affiliation. Dems will oppose Repub picks and vice-versa.
What I am watching is the way the right is opposing her nomination. For the past four days, and right now it is 6:09 am Pacific, all I have heard about is race issues (not judicial decision issues) from the Great White Right.
Before I begin indulge me as I interject a thought:
I considered ignoring this subject altogether unless something really outrageous (actually the behavior from the right IS outrageous, but it's so commonplace that it just seems normal) transpired, then of course I'd be all over it. The subject of race in the United States has become so predictable that it is just tiresome, especially when it comes from pampered, privilged white folk, or white folk that are broke as hell, and not interested in expanding their horizons by picking up a book, newspaper, or watching a t.v. show other than American Idol or some such drivel... *sigh* So here we go...
Sonia Sotomayor is an extraordinarily accomplished individual that happens to be a woman of Latin decent. She sees the world through her eyes, eyes that I'm confident have seen some shit while growing up in a South Bronx project by a single mother. Her dad died when she was nine. She has experiences that no white person could ever understand, and I daresay she has had experiences no one could relate to, unless they were walking in her shoes.
I believe this is a good thing. We now have, on the right, characters such as Newt Gingrich, Karl Rove, Glen Beck, showing their extraordinary fear and trepidation, (okay let's call it what it is: they are fucking tripping) because their vision of the Supreme Court DOES NOT include a Puerto Rican woman.
I laughed as I wrote that last sentence because it's just so damn funny!
So the aforementioned clowns are screaming about a statement Sotomayor made a few years ago. Here it is, courtesy of Media Matters:
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life,"
You decide. The right is screaming "Racism," that she is a "reverse racist!" I guess that means she is being a racist while driving in reverse or some shit like that. A sidebar Great White Right: There is no such thing as "reverse racism" you idiots. Either you are a racist or you're not. "Reverse racism" is a completely idiotic term that makes virtually no sense, much like the very life most of the Great White Right lead.
Okay, so Judge Sotomayor believe she has had experiences as a Latina that could help understand discrimination cases better than a white male. Big surprise. Of course she does! Growing up as a poor kid in the projects, you know damn good and well she has experienced racism against her on all sorts of levels. Racism that a white male has never experienced. There is such a thing as white privilege, white people en masse don't see it cause, well, it is white privilege, after all. So let's forge ahead and see what some of these privileged white folk have to say about this accomplished, articulate woman:
Glen Beck, from his radio show, thanks Media Matters:
Glen Beck cannot conceal his racism at all, when he condescendingly calls her a "Hispanic chick-lady."
Next-Newt Gingrich former speaker of the House, racist, Georgia:
"White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw." The biggest problem Gingrich has is the fact that she is not white, or a Michael Steele type of Black man...
And the Big Boss Limbaugh: Racist Supreme and leader of the Republican Party, Olbermann breaks it down-
Thanks to Media Matters, MSNBC and Olbermann. If you didn't watch the clip, Limbaugh compared her to David Duke, from the Ku Klux Klan. (As a man from Arkansas that walked by smoldering crosses on black people's lawns in the town of Pocahontas on my way to work at Ramon's Grocery store, I can say this woman is no David Duke.)
The right wing has attacked Sotomayor for her heritage, for the food she eats, and some have even demanded she change the way her name is pronounced, make it more "anglicized." Batshit crazy, racist as hell, and it has to stop.
I'm not going to bother to post what Rove had to say, Search it out.
I realize that Obama has seriously offended the sensibilities of these pampered, privileged white folk, but they had better get used to it, 'cause these times they are a changin' and there aint no stopping it. And why would I want to live in a monochromatic world that's ruled by nut jobs with bad hair (or no hair) anyway? The biggest threat these people face, is a sea change in the status quo, and that terrifies their cowardly asses. Let's have Bob Dylan take us out, cause the times they really are changing...

EFFIGY OF OBAMA HUNG AT CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY IN OREGON
NEWS-
Early Tuesday morning, workers found an effigy of Barack Obama hanging from a tree on a university campus outside Portland, OR.
According to the article, a sign was attached to the Obama effigy disparaging students that are recipients of scholarships, largely minority students:
" A sign taped to the cutout said, "Act Six reject," referring to a scholarship program for Portland students, many of whom are minorities."
(thanks to Oregonlive.com)
If the link works, here is the write up on Oregonlive.com.
As many of you know, I have posted in the past about the white American church, and the evangelical movement.
Unfortunately, I cannot say much more than this:
This type of behavior is indicative of the deep racial bias that the white American church, (especially right wing Republicans and conservative Democratic Evangelical churches) harbors in the United States against Blacks and minorities.
The fact that this effigy was hung on a tree at a predominantly white Christian university and not the much larger and more diverse campus of Portland State University speaks whole volumes about the state of the church in the United States, as well as the values that are being taught to the up and coming people in the Evangelical Movement.
Many in the Evangelical movement do not see a problem if the US decides to wage war against another nation.
Many in the Evangelical Movement advocate violence against people that do not accept their belief structure, or their doctrines as they interpret in the Bible.
Many in the Evangelical Movement assume people in lower social strata than themselves have been saddled with a "generational curse" or somehow deserve their misfortune.
Many in the Evangelical Movement believe this especially applies to people of African descent in the United States. It is openly taught that Blacks descend from Ham, and Ham was cursed. It is also taught that their ancestors worshipped demons, animals, etc., (the obvious point being that they didn't worship Jesus and embrace the doctine of the Christian Church. This is a common ploy used to keep the gullible under control, as it is taught in the context of: "THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU!!!") and this has saddled the Black American with "generational curses."
I spoke with a fellow student (and graduate of Rhema! Bible College in the Tulsa, OK area) at my college today, and I related that I had heard through news reports, etc., that Sarah Plain believed the world is five thousand years old and man walked with the dinosaurs, despite there being no scientific evidence to support her assertions. His response? "What's wrong with that?"
(Rhema! is a very influential Evangelical Charismatic church/organization that has influenced millions of people worldwide throughout the past 60 years or so with the ministry of Kenneth E Hagin, and his son, Kenneth W. Hagin)
This is indicative of the nonsense that is taught at Evangelical bible colleges throughout the United States.
And we were worried about madrases in Pakistan!?!
_________________________________________________________________
Those that tried to murder me and advocate the hate crimes against me and my family are devout evangelical Methodists. Samuel Christian Flanagin, Arkansas State Representative Pat Flanagin, Dora Hughes, Pat Flanagin, Jr., and their cohorts in and around the state of Arkansas continually invoke the name of Jesus to justify their crimes while referring to the victims of their hate as "niggers."
When Edward Abbey declared-"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the [US] flag and carrying a cross." He might have been envisioning the point in time we could be at today.
Clearly, Christian Fascism has to be defeated in the United States.
Clearly, people do not realize how large and deeply rooted the problem is.
This is still the Klan operating, albeit sanitized, and it is running strong in the white Evangelical church in the United States.
Clearly, we need a systemic change n the United States.
Peace-

ANOTHER REPUBLICAN ABOVE THE LAW
So Todd Palin, husband of Sarah Palin Veep candidate is refusing to testify after the legislative body of the State of Alaska subpoened him (read here)The obvious rhetorical question is: "What would happen to me if I did that?" Of course, we all know the answer. I would be hauled off to jail, without ceremony.
I emailed a letter to the Alaska Attorney Gerneral, Talis Colberg, and I suggest you all do the same here is the address: attorney.general@alaska.gov.
I left my last name off of my blog but included it in the email along with my address, etc. I guess I'm just begging for a visit from the New American Gestapo! AKA (insert your police department here. Oops, my bad-I guess they're called "law enforcement officers" now. What a fucking joke.)
Here's the email to A.G. Colberg, Alaska:
You are a partisan hack, a coward, and you should be disbarred. I will use you in my closing years in law school to solidify my studies, focus on my goal: To put cowardly pieces of trash like you, todd palin, and sarah palin, scooter libby, karl rove, in jail for breaking the law, and acting as though you are royalty while the rest of us are expected to not only obey this law of the United States, but are called upon to shed our blood so garbage like you can disrespect the memories of the dead and trample on the very things that are supposed to make this country great. Sleep well AG, your turn will be coming. People like you is the reason I have abandoned the Republican Party after 21 years of party line voting.
SARAH PALIN=BAD FOR AMERICA
Mike, Vancouver, WA
I suppose I should have included George Bush in my list as well as Prick Cheney. War crimes? The Hague? Naw, just do it here and lock them away forever. Or bestow upon these two the same fate their lies and deception brought thousands and thousands of Iraqi people and American Soldiers: put their backs against a wall, and then give them a great state funeral. At least we'll be rid of them.
Peace and Love to all you Searchers!
Don't give up hope, revolution is coming. And if McCain/Palin get in, it will be closer than ever.
Mike

WHITE PRIVILEGE-REPOST FROM FIELD-NEGRO
Again a post from The Field-Negro:
~By Tim Wise ~ "For those who still can't grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because 'every family has challenges,' even as black and Latino families with similar 'challenges' are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.
White privilege is when you can call yourself a 'fuckin' redneck,' like Bristol Palin's boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll 'kick their fuckin' ass,' and talk about how you like to 'shoot shit' for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.
White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don't all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you're 'untested.'
White privilege is being able to say that you support the words 'under God' in the pledge of allegiance because 'if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it's good enough for me,' and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the 'under God' part wasn't added until the 1950s--while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.
White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.
White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was 'Alaska first,' and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she's being disrespectful.
White privilege is being able to make fun of community ogrganizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or > an end to child labor--and people think you're being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college--you're somehow being mean, or even sexist.
White privilege is being able to convince white women who don't even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a 'second look.'
White privilege is being able to fire people who didn't support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.
White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God's punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you're just a good church-going Christian, but if you're black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you're an extremist who probably hates America.
White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a 'trick question,' while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O'Reilly means you're dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.
White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it, a 'light' burden.
And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren't sure about that whole 'change' thing. Ya know, it's just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.
White privilege is, in short, the problem. "
I would like to add:
White privilege is AIG getting an 85 billion dollar bailout when the average person in the US is having trouble putting gas in their tanks.
White privilege is vetoing health care for children and cutting education for the masses because your rich white family has always had a doctor and your daddy and grandpa can pull strings to get you in top-notch universities.
We need a systemic change in the United States.
Peace-
Mike

COLLEGE AND STUFF
So I'm finally going to take my ACT test and formally enroll in the University. I've been going for the last couple of terms, but I've never taken the ACT, and I'm not formally enrolled, so I can't get financial aid. Another issue in the richest country on the fucking planet. 12 million dollars an hour in Iraq and we have people living on the streets.
I remember a class I had when I was a kid, it must have bee in like 6th or 7th grade, I would have been 11 or so, and we were watching propaganda films from the Soviet Union that were against the US. The scene that stands out is a homeless dude sleeping on a bench and it was supposedly shot in middle America, Kansas or some shit, and the point the Soviets were trying to make was under capitalism you have people even in the heart of the country living in the streets with no place to go...and, the point they were making was their system is better. So to the point. My teacher, after showing us the film, gleefully pointed out that the scene couldn't have been shot in Kansas 'cause you can see the capitol building, ( in D.C.) in the background!!! We all got a good laugh about that. The point of all that is this: BY THIS TIME WE HAD FORGOTTEN ALL ABOUT THE HOMELESS DUDE, IT TURNED INTO A BIG JOKE OVER HOW STUPID THE SOVIETS WERE.
This, my friends, is a large part of the problem...thank God, (or Apple) for our ipods so we don;t have to face these issues...like my professor Ridwan Laher said..."We gonna go to Starbucks and have a revolution over a latte" dude nailed it. Thank God for Starbucks and their pseudo-intellectualism, as well as their fake art on the walls...what a fucking joke.

Startup Sunday, 10.7.07
So I just finished reading one of my Professors' blogs, Ridwan Laher. He is my Intro to Black Studies Prof @ portland state u. (I aint trying to copy your template, Ridwan I dig the star, albeit it should be RED. Why is a "white" dude taking Black Studies? A couple of words: WHITE AMERICA. White america has worked so hard to sweep its abysmal history under the rug that growing up in a white upper middle class suburb of Chicago, the question of race and the real history of our country was almost non-existent. White students, white teachers, white cops white judges, white politicians...it seemed like Chicago was a world and a million miles away from our pathetic enclave and most of the white folks lived in stark (although largely unspoken-that would be racist! *GASP*) terror of Black people trying to escape the horror and poverty of the inner city. It wasn't until I got older, that is in my 20's that I realized how f*cking-
hang on that damn Lars Larson commercial came on again on the tv-this clown is trying to tell me the US is a nation of laws, that we ought to follow the laws, blah f-ing blah. What people like Lars Larson forget is this country was not founded on law, but on the rape of the natives, and BREAKING BRITISH LAW. The British considered the colonists to be terrorists. For Gods' sake, they threw out the f*cking tea into the harbor!
This country was founded on lawbreakers and lawbreaking. DON'T EVER FORGET IT!
This country and the politicians that run it don't follow the laws, look at Larry Craig from Idaho...gonna resign his position and tell motherf*ckers sh*t that don't make no sense. Gonna tell ppl that he didn't know he was pleading guilty to soliciting sex in a male bathroom. Gonna tell ppl that he didn't have legal counsel and didn't know what he was doing...he has been in congress for 20 years or more, cramming laws down the citizens of this nation, and he is going to lie his a** off and tell us he doesn't know the law. And then renig on his promise to get the hell out of Congress.
Hell, I'm not a Senator but I know the law well enough to know when I am pleading guilty or innocent to a crime, and I sure as hell know enough to know to get a lawyer when dealing with this horrible corrupt self-serving out of control "legal" system...
Okay...so I was in my 20's when I realized how damn racist my father and mother as well as my grandparents, etc are/were. My grandfather driving me through parts of Chi-town and saying stupid sh*t like "this neighborhood was really nice until the "jigs" showed up." When a child is 5 or 6 years old they don't have a clue what "jig" is or what mindless hate is. That sh*t is learned.
Thinking of that I'd like to take all of these white soccer moms with their ridiculous soccer balls on their mini vans and make like lemmings off a cliff. Same with the SUV drivers trying to navigate their behemoths thru Starbucks drive thru so they can get a caramel macchiato "venti" of course, with its 750 calories or so "food porn" I heard someone refer to it...along with a blueberry ooze cake...then listen to them bitch about how their trucks and their asses can't fit thru the drive thru (I've got to get a picture of that). What has this country come to? A bunch of whining white racists worried sick that "the Mexicans" are going to take over or worse yet, "the Blacks" may buy a house in their neigborhood.
My wife and I moved to Portland from the south, in particular North Carolina, in the blue ridge range of the great smoky mountains. Don't let the name fool ya, the bud there sucked. Much better here. My Lady was born and raised in a pissant town named Forrest City in Arkansas.
Where did the name come from? The founding fathers, white racist pigs that they were, and still are, (see pat flanagin and hank and samuel flanagin-more on those clowns in the future, there is plenty to say about those pigs...)couldn't seem to come up with anything better so they named it after Confederate "war hero" and founder of the ku klux klan, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Disgusting, huh? Yep that's the south, and I spent 15 years in it. While in Arkansas, from 11/87 until 8/2000, I saw cross burnings on my neighbors lawn in Pocahontas, met a guy who owned land in melbourne, ar, that he proudly displayed a plaque on an oak tree signifying it was a tree used for lynching blacks, saw police beat black people mercilessly, saw poverty, oppression of blacks, and an utter unwillingness for the politicians to do anything. When I was walking to work one morning in 1989 I rounded the corner and saw several police cars, cops, news, neighbors, etc standing around a smoldering cross that had been pushed over into the grass. The police response? "Awww its just some rednecks out fooling around" The outrage I felt and feel still over some damn white redneck cop dismissing such hate as a "redneck joke" fuels my contempt for the white system we have in this country.

And ppl wonder why the sh*t is going on in Jena Louisiana today. A steadfast refusal to acknowledge that disgusting past whites are trying to deny. There is all kinds of stupidity in the south, but none so blatant as, well, all of it. Then you have Robert Byrd, a known racist and ex member of the Klan saying stupid sh*t like "I know white ni*gers too, there's such a thing as white ni*gers. " All while he's shaking all over the tv screen. Why this buffoon has a job in the senate after 250 years is beyond me. People like him need to go far far away. His ridiculous comments are simply contrived by southerners to try to mask their true feeling toward blacks.
I don't give a damn about the "new" south. There is no such thing. THERE IS NO SUCH THING. Hate and racism are still alive and well in the south and it will never stop as long as ppl keep electing piles of crap like robert byrd or pat flanagin. (fortunately that SOB was kicked out of office due to term limits.) This is an elected pig 11 terms to the AR state Reps who sat behind his huge desk and proclaimed an end to welfare and poor black women need to stop having kids and make something of themselves.
Him and Clinton and others called it "welfare reform" Then this bastard goes back to his giant house on a hill with massive white pillars out front (I'm not making this up) his life of privilege, his psychotic two sons and his beautiful daughter. And the wife he's cheating on. Oh did I mention his first child he had that he threw away under the guise of adoption? It would have f-ed up his political career...and this jewel of a person judges me.
A bible in one hand and a pistol in the other. (Thanks Ridwan for that visual on the first day of class!) He would kill me if he thought he could get away with it. I have news for all-I do not cowtow to anyone and I stand (and in between my mother beating my head against the wall she taught me to stand for what I believe in).
Wow
Wow
When I figure out my digi camera and all about this blog stuff I'm going to post pix etc.
I really dig my Intro to Black Studies Class, I'm going to continue on in that, and perhaps law school. I'm 39 on 10/21, but my life is just beginning. I'm so thankful for my Lady and my son, as well as my other children. More about that and the ridiculousness of the discriminating Child Support scam in the US. God help these bastards when I get my degrees...Your time is coming.
Peace to all who need it, and to those that have tried to murder me in the past and destroy my life and my families'-the clock is ticking...
